Can you account for the hole?

Here is a puzzle to test your mathematical IQ.

Below are two similar triangular figures, each divided into four smaller coloured areas. You can easily check that each of the smaller coloured areas has exactly the same dimensions in the lower figure as in the upper one - the coloured areas are simply rearranged. How can you explain the existence of the 'hole' of one square unit in the lower figure? Shouldn't the total areas be the same?

How long did you take to solve the puzzle? 10 seconds? 10 minutes? 10 hours? Or...?
